What is Technological Determinism? 


        The theory is that technology is the decisive force in promoting the development of human society. I understand that technological determinism can explain or solve all the problems encountered in the development of human culture.

“thinking about the relationship between technology and society has been “common sense” for so long that it has hardly needed a label. But its critics have termed it “technological determinism,” (Wyatt, S. (2008))

Two Ways of Technological Determinism


       Hard determinists believe that technology plays a complete and comprehensive role in shaping human society.

    Soft determinists argue that technology is not the only factor, but that human interaction with society is also impoTechnological determinism hasn't really gone away, and everyone's idea of it is different.


        Technological determinism observes the development of human society from the perspective of technology and holds that technology is the only decisive factor in promoting social progress. Although I think that the existence of technology is the development of our human beings to become better, that's very paranoid. Because it ignores so many other factors. Technological determinism is unlikely to go away. Because there are two sides to it anyway. 



        Through the confrontation between the different views of Hard and Soft technical determinism, I found some authority figures whose contents and opinions were not necessarily correct. We can not completely deny them. We can continue to maintain our own opinions. The argument between hard and soft reminds me of the time when we talk with others in daily life. When we encounter differences, we don't necessarily need to argue a right or wrong. We can present evidence and express our opinions, and other readers will use examples to determine their position.

    It is interesting to state that the argument between soft and hard TD will remain forever as a debate. People's thoughts change over time mainly by the environment that they are surrounded with. The "debate" will allow them to think about the idea of TD critically at different moments in the future.

    Hi! Absolutely! We should all practice critical thought when considering the knowledge and "facts" that have been given to us, in my opinion. Technological determinism has encouraged us to consider whether there is a cause and effect relationship between civilization and technology. I've given some attention to issues like how and whether the emergence of writing, printing, the internet, and other technologies influenced our civilization. No matter what people may think, it unquestionably challenges their views of the status quo.

    Hi Yixuan! I really agree with you that there is no absolute right and wrong on both soft determinism or hard determinism. In other words, this relationship might be different for different people an in different time. Since everyone has distinct feeling on the relationship between technology and their own life, the continuum we had in the class actually shows the extent to which people believe technology influence their life.
